What we're looking for

There's no magic formula

But when we're choosing dances for Western Stomp, there are a few things that tend to grab our attention.

🎵

A great song

Music choice matters. Is it a song people will want to hear — and dance to — again and again? Does it suit the style and level of the dance? We also consider the audience: lyrics and overall song content need to be appropriate for the class, venue and community we're teaching it to.

Something memorable

It doesn't have to be difficult or reinvent line dancing — but we love a dance that gives us something. A great combination, an unexpected moment, a hook, clever footwork, or a section you can't wait to come back around to.

🎶

Musicality

We love choreography that feels like it belongs to the song. Whether it hits the lyrics, follows the phrasing or simply captures the feel of the music, we want the dance and track to work together.

🤠

Great flow & floor feel

Sometimes a dance just feels GOOD to dance. Steps should flow naturally, transitions should make sense, and the level should feel appropriate for the choreography.

The “we NEED to teach this” factor

This one's hard to define — but we know it when we feel it. We're looking for dances that make us immediately think: our dancers are going to love this.

What we're not looking for

Don't talk yourself out of it

  • You don't need a huge following.
  • You don't need to be an established choreographer.
  • Your dance doesn't need to already be popular.
  • And complicated definitely doesn't mean better.

A beautifully choreographed Absolute Beginner dance can excite us just as much as an Advanced one. It doesn't have to be difficult — but it does have to give us something.
