Which class is mine?

Understanding the levels

Not sure where you fit? Here's what each level actually means on the floor. And if you're still unsure, just ask an instructor on the night — we'd rather you land in the right room.

Absolute Beginner

For someone brand new to line dancing. Very basic steps, simple rhythms, lots of repetition, minimal turning and usually straightforward patterns. The instructor explains everything from scratch.

Beginner

You're starting to build a line-dance vocabulary. Dances may include vines, jazz boxes, shuffles and chassés, rocking chairs and basic turns. You're expected to recognise some terminology, but teaching is still quite detailed.

High Beginner on the timetable

The top end of beginner. New moves start coming in — weaves, montereys — and the pace picks up.

Improver

The bridge between beginner and intermediate. More step combinations, turns, syncopated steps and different rhythms. Restarts and tags may appear. You're expected to already know common terminology, so less time is spent explaining individual basic steps.

High Improver on the timetable

Quicker pace and a faster teach, with harder turns and more intricate movement than a standard improver class.

Intermediate

A much broader dance vocabulary is assumed. More complex combinations, quicker directional changes, syncopation, varied rhythms, spins and turns, tags and restarts, and phrasing. Teaching generally focuses on the sequence, rather than teaching you how to execute every individual step.

Advanced

For highly experienced dancers. Complex footwork, timing, technique, rotations, unusual rhythms and intricate phrasing. You need a strong dance vocabulary and the ability to pick up choreography quickly.

The questions we get asked most

Do I need a partner?

No. Line dancing is danced solo in lines — that's the whole point. Come on your own, bring a friend, bring six.

Do I need boots?

Not at all. Wear something comfortable you can move in. Plenty of people dance in sneakers. Boots are optional, and yes, some of us have a problem.

I've never danced before.

Perfect — that's exactly who Absolute Beginners is for. We break every step down, and everyone in that room started the same way.

Do I need to book?

No. Just turn up and pay at the door, cash or card. No term, no enrolment, no sign-up form.

How old do I need to be?

All ages and abilities are welcome. We have pre-teens right through to dancers in their eighties and over, often on the same floor.

What if I miss a week?

Nothing happens. There's no term, no enrolment, no commitment. Come when you can.
